EC study on risk of social exclusion in the EU
The European Commission has published a new study on the risk of social exclusion faced by millions of European through lack of access to basic financial service. The study reveals that 2 in 10 adults in EU-15 and almost half in EU-10 (47%) do not have a bank account while many more have no savings and lack access to credit. The results of the study were discussed at a high level conference in Brussels, bringing together the financial sector, consumer groups, public authorities and NGOs. The initiative follows the Single Market Review of November 2007, where the Commission announced its intention to ensure that, by a certain date nobody is denied access to a basic bank account. The State of European cities : the Urban Audit
The European Commission is presenting the Urban Audit at a conference in Brussels on 10 June 2008. The Urban Audit brings together a broad range of indicators on the quality of life in European cities. The indicators cover over 300 cities within the European Union as well as cities in Norway and Switzerland. A number of key questions for the future of cities will be dealt with during the conference, including the aging of the population, migration phenomena, housing, competitiveness and the attractiveness of cities. Employment Week 2008
